Dressing for Your Session

Deciding on what to wear for your session can be overwhelming, especially if you have other family members to dress as well.

Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

For Everyone:

  • Neutrals, pastels and earth tones work best. Chances are if you are on this page, you are intrigued by the light, airy and timeless style and colours you see featured throughout my work. Dressing in light colours helps pull together this aesthetic.

  • Mom comes first. Pick mom’s outfit first, and then plan everyone else’s based on hers. Which leads to my next point…

  • Compliment, don’t coordinate. Focus on choosing colour palettes that compliment each other, rather than having everyone dress in the same colour.

  • Avoid orange, red or neon colours.

  • Avoid busy patterns. We love a good floral print over here, but bold stripes or clothing with writing, images or logos on it are best left at home.

For Kids:

  • I highly recommend that if your child is wearing a dress, opt for some small shorts underneath. Kiddos are wild and there is lots of play involved in our sessions. This helps ensures even the craziest of poses are safe.

  • Don’t sleep on overalls. Nothing is cuter than a toddler in overalls.

  • Look for textures and knits.

For Him:

  • Khaki pants/shorts and light wash denim photograph beautifully and are easy to pair with a button down top.

  • Avoid bulky wrist watches which can be distracting.

  • Avoid hats as they will block your face in many images, or be prepared to remove your hat for some photos

For Her:

  • As mentioned above, be sure to select your outfit first, then coordinate a colour palette to match.

  • If wearing a dress, opt for midi to maxi length dresses. Mini dresses can greatly limit the amount of poses or actions during a session. You never want to be worried if something is showing!

  • For the colder months, consider adding a chunky cardigan on top to keep you warm.

  • Make sure you feel comfortable and confident and can move freely.

  • Don’t overthink it!
